My Horrible Vacation Experience!
A Lesson in Customer Service and Common Courtesy!
My wife, Jayme, our 15-month old son, Neil, and our dog Lady went on vacation last weekend to Taylor Park, CO. I have been going to Taylor Park my entire life, and it is my all time favorite place to spend time! Unfortunately, we had an awful time! Here is the whole story:
We made the mistake of staying at "Holt's / Eibert's Guest Ranch." This outfit has not been in Taylor Park for very long (relatively speaking), and it is my opinion that it won't be there for much longer given the horrible customer service that I received!
We arrived on Friday, August 18. When I scheduled the reservations we originally were not planning on bringing the dog. So I told them it would be my wife, my son and myself. They said they had a "perfect" cabin for us... 3E. So I reserved it. Little did I know that it was a one-room, 250 square foot structure that was literally falling apart! For the privilege of staying there we would spend $75 per night plus "fees" (it ended up costing me over $200 per night - see below!).
We called back when we decided to take the dog, and they explained that it would be $5 more per night (added to the $75 per night already). We said that would not be a problem. Apparently, she forgot to make a note about this, because on the third day they accused me of sneaking in an "undeclared" pet and trying to pull a fast one over on them (see below).
If you have not been to Taylor Park, let me explain that it is way up in the Colorado Rocky Mountains. One year, I camped there over the Fourth of July weekend to wake up to four inches of snow! It is breath-takingly beautiful, but it can and does get very cold at night. This is not a place that I would willingly bring my 15 month old baby without heat in the cabin! Yet, that is exactly what I did!
Every time I asked about getting the heat in my cabin turned on, I was treated with what I can only describe a downright meanness. These people were downright mean! Now I am a patient, laidback, easy-going kind of guy. I can let an awful lot of things go, and I did for two whole (cold) nights.
On Sunday morning, we still had no heat. I finally was able to shame them into sending a guy over to look at it. According to him, he was not even told that there was a problem with my cabin until a few minutes before he came over. In fact, he went on to chastise me for not letting them know sooner! The lady at the front desk, on the other hand, had a completely different story! According to her, she had told him the first time I mentioned it.
Then she lit into us for having the dog! I explained that we called back after our initial conversation to let her know that we were bringing the dog. She stood in front of me and insinuated that I was lying to her face. That was the final straw for me. She ultimately was able to "recall" the second conversation. By that, time, I was ready to go.
Believe it or not, they begged us to stay. They even offered to upgrade us to a nicer "mobile home!" Whoopty Doooo! Why would I want to stay at a place where I have been so severely mistreated for three days and two nights? They acted like they were doing me a favor by allowing me to stay!
They refused, by the way, to refund me my money for the unused part of our stay (they charged us in advance for the whole five nights). This means I spent over $200 per night for a "Ted Kosinsky" like cabin.
This woman continued to say that she would do whatever it took to make us happy. She was not willing to refund us the three nights we did not use, so I guess she must be a habitual liar. Unfortunately, there is not much that I can do about it.
Experts say that if you are treated poorly by a business, twelve people on average will hear about it. In this case, it is my goal to multiply that by 1000 times. I have a lot of work to do to reach this goal, but I am very determined!
Sincerely,

All i can say is that since Holts has changed hands and the Mannings are no loger running it it as gone to hell.Since i was 12 we always stayed there, never a problem. Two years ago we went up there to find it had changed hands. We had dirty sheets on the bed,a god awful smell later to find out it was someones dinner left inside the oven from 2 weeks ago.The people running it had ATVs running all hours of the night,Shirley would never allow this. The ATVs drove across the lawn where are small children were playing at the time with no regaurd to them. Trash was over flowing. So yes I know where you are coming from. It sad to see such a thing.

Vicki,
Thanks for your feedback. I stayed at Holt's several years ago and enjoyed the experience very much. That was when the Mannings were still there, and they were wonderful. It really has gone downhill since then!

I'm not sure where you stayed, but I doubt it was at Holts/Eiberts Guest Ranch. We just spent the last week there June 16-25, 2007 and had a great time. The cabin was spotless, the beds were clean and more firm that any I had stayed in at any of the locations we have used in the past 20 years. We have stayed at 3-rivers, Taylor Park, Silent Springs, Big Horn Guest Ranch and so forth.
The owner Elanor was very nice to us during our stay as were the other members of the staff.
The maintenace guy was really a nice guy and so was the lady who handled the booking.
I placed my dirty towels out in the morning and had clean, fresh ones by the time I returned from fishing. We even had two young buck deer in the back yard - they even had the velvet on their antlers.
Now all I have to say is shame on whoever started the rumor that Holts/Eiberts was not a nice place to stay. Other families I had spoken to who have stayed at Holts for over 20 years said they had never had any experiences like the ones described above.
Frenchy's hamburgers are still the best I've had in the area.
If you have not stayed in Colorado in a cabin before, please keep in mind you will not be staying at the Ritz no matter where you decide to stay. The cabins are all clean and very nice - we really have not had any bad experiences - except one location in Gunnison and I won't tarnish their reputation, it just wasn't our type of place.
And for the ATV comment, there were a few there, but I did not hear anyone racing around on them and no one was up early on them. Anyone who would ride through the kid's area between the cabins would have been stopped, the 2nd afternoon Mary didn't recognize us on the play ground and stopped by to make sure we were guests there.
My 10 year old had a great time playing with the other kids, some who were staying all year.
Please, please do not take some of the comments seriously above, again, I'm not sure where these people stayed, but it certianly wasn't the same place we stayed!
If you want pictures, post a blog and I'll put them out there, so you can see what a nice, clean place this was.
I do not believe that Elanor has owned Frenchy's very long - but I'll send them and email and find out. The lady who served us was very frendly and even remembered us when she saw us again a couple of days later at Holts!

Mr. or Ms. Cama,
Thank you for your post. I appreciate all comments on this weblog.
I think it is important to explain to you that I am not so stupid that I do not know where I stayed! I am actually quite insulted by your statements to the contrary. I personally do not make a habit of insulting people's intelligence (especially people I have not even met!), and would not assume that you are a moron just because you have a perception that is different from mine. Please do me the same courtesy.
“Shame” on you J Cama for calling my statements of fact merely a "rumor." What happened, happened, and it happened exactly the way I described. Period.
In response to your comments, I would first say that your "20 years" statement has no relevancy to the current situation at Holt's / Eibert's since the new management has recently taken over. In fact, I was treated extremely well by the previous owners!
Secondly, Taylor Park is a wonderful place to stay, complete with wildlife and all! So the deer comment also has no relevancy either. The deer do not stay away because the owners are jerks.
Lastly, I found it interesting that you had to deal with the maintenance guy. I hope you didn't need him for heat! Hopefully, you only dealt with him in passing.
I stand by everything I have stated, and I do know where I stayed in August of 2006.
Sincerely,
Jay Haynes

July 15 we will leave for Holts Guest Ranch. I know it has changed, but I believe the cabins we have stayed in have been very nice, we stay in the cabins with a shower and I believe they are a little nicer, but I have also heard from a friend who has stayed at Holts for 25 years that the trading post cabins are not as nice as at Holts at least the one he stayed in last year ( 2006 ). Lets hope my stay this year will be good. A Kansas On His Way.....

Just got home from Taylor Park and Holts after a weeks stay. Our hot water heater went out and was replaced immediately in cabin # 1. The stay was great and enjoyed every minute at Holts. We found 5 gold nuggets south of Tin Cup, and were very excited. Was a lot of work with sluice and pans. The trash was picked up every day by 8 am Colorado time and towels were replace every day and not one time were missed or late. I also have been staying at Holts for approx 25 years and would highly recommend them for a great place to stay. It is roughing it to somewhat but is nice and cool climate and lots of fishing , prospecting, atv ing. Any questions or comments on Holts I would be glad to answer. Thanks for the opportunity to comment on Holts. my email ams@access-one.com

Been staying at Holts for years. We have noticed a change in the up keep, but have always been treated fairly. Each year there is different staff, maybe your experience will make them a bit more picky. Customer Service is what it is all about. I can't wait to go back. I have two trips planned there this summer.

Our family stayed at holts august 2006, we had a great time, and experience even after my wife tried to blow up the cabin with the gas stove, and my buddies dog who was staying in the next cabin chased the owner(Mary), they were still very nice, and even gave me and my wife an extra night for free for our birthdays! The kids love it there too! I guess every experience will be different, but ours was good!!

(Yard Master) Tom,
I am glad to hear that you had gas to blow the cabin up with... that is certainly more than we had!
They gave you a free night? They must have given you one of the three they stole from me! Since they still owe two more, so you should ask if you can have those also.
Your dog chased her? Did they accuse you of having an undeclared pet? In my case they were much more concerned about the 20 year old, torn up, mud stained carpet than they were heat for my 15 month old son!

We prospect for gold, fish, and ride ATV, and enjoy every minute of the area and also Holts. If u are in Taylor Park area stop and c the color we have found. We have several places we discovered a small amount of gold, not a lot but very satisfying when the color appears. Thanks and enjoy the Colorado areas.........

My family has been a part of Taylor Park for four generations. Holt/Eiberts USED to be a great place to stay. Now, it is overran by ATV's and places to stay that only want your money. I have nothing nice to say about Eiberts. The owners will lie, and Frency's is dirty. If you want to come to Taylor Park, be someone who appreciates sollitude and respects the enviornment without the overuse.

Stayed at Holts 2 years ago for the annual " go back to Colo, get out of the furnace we call Phoenix, and land Trophy Mackinaw" trip. My experience was pretty much the same as Jay's. Although it sounds like they are getting better ( maybe rookie ownership issues ), I decided it is better to stay in Gunnison, and drive up at 4:30 am, and Cheaper. Rip...We will be there the same time. I will be there 7/7 to 7/9, then Heading to Bartlesville Okla to visit family and go Striper fishing. So if you see an SUV with AZ Plates...That will be me.

Last year was our first year ever being to Colorado, and fell in love with the area, we went with some family members who have been going for 30+ years, we stayed at Taylor Park Trading Post and couldn't have asked for better service, although it was torture not having an ATV or dirt bike (and no way we could have afforded $159 a day for an ATV), we had the time of our lives on bicycles and our own two feet, climbed Mount K which was a blast but when we got to the top we were dying for a Dr. Pepper machine!
We have a reservation to stay at Taylor Park again, I was wondering before we reserve a cabin again for next year..have you ever stayed down at the Quartz Creek Cabins in Pitkin, or heard anything about them? Taylor Park is great but I was curious to check out the other areas, lol didn't want to suggest we stay there next year if it turned out anything near what u experienced at Holts. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions on next years stay.
Thanks from The Okies!

Just arrived home in Abilene, Ks
(Boyhood Home of Dwight D. Eisenhower) after a stay with Eleanor at Holts Guest Ranch. My Son, Grandson and I had a great time prospecting, and riding 4 wheelers on a lot of the trails. Had snow and sleet on the 8th or 9th of July. Weather conditions were perfect and so was our stay at Holts. Being a business man I know u can not please everyone, but in my opinion Eleanor does a fine job to make people comfortable. This was not my first time at Holts. I have been going there for many years and I realize this is not a Holiday Inn and would not expect a first class motel in the area, we go there to get away from that kind of area. This is my opinion and I am sticking to it. Thanks........Rip Daniels Abilene, Kansas

Wow, All i can say to your story is "Deja Vu"! My family and i have been going there for the last five years including this year. In fact we just got back last week! The Grills dont work, the shower leaks, you can see daylight through the bathroom walls, theres mold around the showeres, theres an inch of dirt under the beds, and the service is terrible!! When i went down to get some bath towels from the office she gave me four and then told me to bring down my dirty ones, this kinda made me mad part of theyre service is to go around and pick up the dirty towels! Beyond that, a guy in our party was sick one day and decided to stay at his cabin! Elenor (the lady who runs the Ranch) just walked in the cabin without knocking and started talking to him while he was on the shitter!

Well here it is December 26 day after Christmas and will soon be calling Holts again for cabin in July. We always call in January for reservations and have always had a very good time there and have always been treated very nicely. The owners had given us permission to prospect on their claim last year. We have been finding GOLD the last 3 years and find it is a lot of work but really enjoy it. We keep our gold each year and look at it all winter. Also we bring the 3 Four Wheelers and ride all the trails. The weather is great especially when the temp. is 105 back home in Kansas. We have found the cabins are clean every year and we cant wait to get back. Thanks Colorado for having such a great place....

I was treated like family. The cabins are old and rustic. They are kept very clean. The lady in the office, Mary is very nice and will call the maintance guy, Dave for any issue's that may come up like re-lighting the furnace. They are making allot of up-grades this year. HEY RIP! I have GOLD FEVER! We have been collecting buckets of dirt from streams and the like. Just have to figure out how to get the gold out. I will say hi when you are there in cabin 1 on July 19-25. Reading all the comments, I can't help but wonder if a couple perhaps is related to or in some way partioning for the Holts place!!! Why else dispute and honest experience by someone just trying to share a negative experience. I'm sure had they had that expereince they would have felt compelled to do the same. Jaye, sounds like you may have been directly responsible for the Holts 'cleaning' up their act. I don't care if they are perfectly nice and accomodating to 1000 people, if I know they even have the capability to being rude and freezing a 15 month old baby....I'm not so dumb as to take the risk with my well earned vacation or money! Thanks for the warning Jaye....heed well recieved! I couldn't help but chuckle at the person trying to compare the difference of the Holiday Inn to a mountain resort....anyone ever looking for a mountain retreat knows this....but how about a little heat, and some courtesy wouldn't hurt, even for a mountain resort! I think your point was completely lost on him! By the way, we are going in September but decided on a nice cozy cabin so we won't have to depend on the whims of a host!!!

You can't expect five star hotel treatment at a guest ranch, but you get the best service out of any other guest ranch we've been to.
Shame on you Jay Haynes.
but.... it's a very beautiful place to stay with people that make it comfortable

We stayed at Holts in July, it is a roof over your head and that is it. Dont expect to much and be prepared for a bit of a shock when you get there. I was surprised that the owners would let things get in such bad shape, but maybe they are just waiting to get out.
The nice thing is you are in the middle of some really great atv routes so you spend most the time on your atv and little time in the cabin.
I guess if you where to ask me would I stay there again? Only as a last option.

I personally know a member of the staff that worked at Holt's last year. She has made comments that a couple years ago they had a very bad crew (not the easiest place to get help , which is why Mannings sold it). But I have to say that this place does absolutely no advertising and never has and is always full all season with mostly repeats. So that should say something in itself. I think you can have a bad experience anywhere. Taylor Park and Holts are the only places UP there and are fairly similar. This is an area you go to fish, prospect, ride Atv's and dirtbikes, not look at carpet. These places are a clean bed and a roof over your head. the cabins ( some alsmost a 100 years old) is the charm of the stay. but obviously not for everyone.

James - I am glad for you and your family that you had a much better experience than I did.
Rhonda - I agree with several things you say. I agree that Taylor Park is not for everyone... but Taylor Park is definitely for me! In my opinion, it is the greatest place on earth. I have been going there since the 1960's, and I plan on continuing well into the future. However, I wouldn't recommend staying there in a cabin with no heat, especially with a young child. I also agree that a person can have a bad experience anywhere. Very true! I had my bad experience at Holt's. I also agree that getting good help is probably harder in Taylor Park than in other places. I think my experience is evidence of this. Don't forget that the owners also refused to give me even a partial refund (let alone a full refund) of money that I had paid for nights I did not use. That was, of course, their choice. It is also my choice to tell the honest story of what happened. So apparently, not only can you not find good labor at Holt's, but you cannot find good management as well! :)
Thank you for your comments everyone! Please feel free to continue the honest dialog of this situation.

I have been going with a group of fisherman for the last several years to Taylor. We used to stay at the Trading Post but our reservations were messed up one year and we ended up having to stay at Holt's. Needless to say, I won't go back to the Trading Post. As a women when I go to Taylor I expect to stay in a Cabin and not a hotel. I have two dogs I bring every year and have never had any problems. Customer service has always been good and we have always had heat, clean towels and clean bedding. The carpets are a little weathered, but again it's a cabin. If you are looking for a hotel-like-room you can pay the price and stay in Almont or Gunnison.(Although you would save money in Gunnison, you would pay it in gas driving back and forth everyday.) There are about three groups of five people that stay at Holt's and have never had a problem either. Ice off is right around the corner and I am ready to jig for some Mack's! Happy Adventures to Everyone regardless where you stay!
Cheers,
Megan

Megan,
Thank you for your feedback. I am glad to hear that you had a positive experience. Unfortunately, as you probably read, I did not.
I totally agree with you that staying in a cabin in Taylor Park is markedly different than staying in a hotel room... its much better! At least it should be.
If you have no heat in your cabin and owners who accuse you of lying and don't bother to let the repairman even know for two days, then treat you with downright meanness, I would say you would be better off stuck in some hotel room... especially if you are paying over $200 per night like I did.
Hopefully, for your sake, you will not be subjected to the kind of horrible mistreatment that I was.
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Jay Haynes

Jay, your bitterness will affect you adversely in life. I would expect Sensei would know this. Would you consider staying there this year annonymously and give an honest, objective view of your experience? This is the ATV destination of the USA and all the local bussiness in the area depend on the revenue it generates. Snow machine rental and ATV rental at the Trading Post. A place to stay by the lake at the Trading Post as well as Holts. I know this would clear the demons that may effect you and your family by hanging on to this negativity.

anyone have the phone # to Holts? I tried the 970-641-2733 # and it is disconnected. I stayed twice at Taylor Park last year and now want to take my kids to the area but taylor Park is full the week I want.
Any other ideas of where to stay to ride ATVs right out of your door? Please email me @ mule2500@yahoo.com if you would be so kind- I don't want to cancel trip with kids due to no where to stay. Thank you

This web log is fabulous! I am savoring every line and will have to reserve much of it for future reading. Jay, you have really started something. Really, this should be published is a more respectable and widely read publication. I guess the place has a lot of loyal folks over the years. Don't doubt your account however. Sounds like it was a mutually negative experience, but they should have refunded the unused portion of your payment-its not worth the bad Kharma, and they will figure that out eventually. Thanks for getting this started, may it continue into eternity-most good feuds do.

We made the same mistake in July of 2009. Place was filthy, showers moldy (in dry 8000 altitude?) junk metal piled everywhere, and our kids found literally thousands of bugs crawling on our grandchildren when they put them to bed and turned out the lights. Office refunded our deposit for RV and refunded their money with statement that they had sent the bugs to their "lab." Lie about little things, lie about bid ones. Never again use Holt's clip joint. And yes we live in Colorado, camp all over and just gave up our horses for ATV's. Better to camp on the river in a tent by far.

It is July 9th 2010 and now back in Abilne, Ks after a week at Holts cabin # 1 . Weather was great in June, and gold prospecting was very good to us. No complaints with Holts, and we enjoyed our stay very much. Will be checking off the days on the calendar until we can go again next year. June turned out to be a lot less conjested and less traffic of all kinds. I hope u 2 can enjoy Taylor Park . Rip Daniels, Rick Daniels, and Austin Daniels.

Has anyone heard what kind of bugs were infested on the children? Was the health department notified? I hope this is not true. I really dont believe that these were bed-bugs.

I must say, dirty floors should not come with the territory. So the place has seen better days and age is catching up. No excuse for anything in the cabins dirty period!

i was at holts last week and i found a tarantula in the cupboard. When i "subdued" the spider, i was attacked by what appeared to be a komodo dragon, infested with literally 1000 bugs.

We've been staying at Holts on and off for the past 20 years. Last visit was August 25-29. We found the cabin to be clean and the staff to be friendly. The reality is ATVing has taken over Taylor Park. Holts and the Trading Post pretty much have to allow them to survive as a business. In the past we usually took our ATV's and they were more than willing to help us with a place to park the ATV trailer with no additional charge. This year we decided to just fish and relax and it became clear that in the past fishing equipment would be outside the cabins and it was quiet in TAYLOR PARK now there is a lot of noise everywhere with all the ATVS and dirt bikes. Took our dog with us and no issues from them charged us 5.00 a night for her. The cabins are rustic what does one expect in the mountains. One thing is they should not have carpet in the cabins it's just gross and no way to clean it. We really didn't see people stick around the cabins like they use to they all got up and left for most of the day.

Been all over the world and think Taylor Park is one of the most beautiful places I've seen. If you want solitude, and to see the REAL Colorado; this is the place.
Had been going to Taylor Park Trading Post Cabins for 9 years from 1995-2004 every year first week in October. Always had great weather(Lucky?). Stopped going because of financial reasons and my wife is just not a fan(Long Island Girl who likes fancy resorts). We lovingly called it the FCT after her and what she loathingly called it. The C and T stood for Cabin Trip and you can imagine what the F stood for(Although we used to tell the kids it stood for Freaky).
Anyway, I loved it and missed it each year we couldnt go. Anyway, this year I will celebrate my 50th birthday (Oct. 6th) and my wife wanted to know what I wanted; guess what I picked? Yup!! the Tenth FCT is on (10/1-10/3)!!!
I love the cabins on the hill. We usually get #29 but it was booked; so were getting 28 or 27. There is nothing like that view on the hill, the lake, the Mountains surrounding, the mist in the morning. Now THAT'S Colorado!
I am a little astonished the rates went up so high ($127 for a 2bdrm, 3 double bed cabin on the hill) and was interested in those other cabins we always passed on the way up to Tincup.
After reading this, I dont want to risk my hard earned vacation dollar, but will stop by and take an unbiased(and comparitive) look at what Holts has.
The ones on the Hill at Taylor are, newer, clean, and we've always had heat and hot water along with a full working kitchen.
If you go, make sure you break out the John Denver CD...it really fits.

I must say I'm terribly sorry that some people have had a bad experience at Holt's Guest Ranch. I worked there this last summer, (2010) and I know that we worked damn hard to make sure that the cabins were cleaned and in proper order for guests. As pointed out, they are extremely old and are RUSTIC!
We also made sure to take care of any and all requests by our guests.
And, Jay, I know exactly who you are talking about and if it helps, as of this last summer, she is no longer working there. She made life difficult for EVERYONE, which is a sad thing to say but there it is.
I'm looking forward to seeing all of our repeat guests this coming summer and I hope everyone keeps an open mind and let THEIR visit speak for itself!

I have been working for Eleanor for the past 7 years. I have to say I have not worked for a nicer lady. I run the restaurant Frenchy's Cafe in Tin Cup. I have also worked for her on her ranch. Never has she ever mistreated a customer.I think that her employees are very good. All the employees she has now have all been with her the npast 3 to 4 years. That has to say something for Eleanor if she has not had any employee turnover for sometime. If anyone has not had the chace to eat at the restaurant please try us out we have the best burger, pies and shakes around. The view from the restaurant is so beautiful. Holts is a great place and so are the people running it. Hope to see many new faces this summer.

I've got reservations at holts this summer and it sounds like it is better now than when Jay had a bad experience but I have to admit I'm a little nervous about staying there. Tried to get a cabin at the trading post but they are all booked up. Stayed at 3 rivers last year but hated the drive every day.

Jay,
Since you have been going to Taylor all of your life, (which perhaps hasn't been as long as mine) but maybe you can help me with my question. I also went to Taylor most of my childhood for one or two weeks in the summer (way back in 1962-1978). Sherm and his sons owned the cabins at Taylor Lake way back then and I remember staying in Cabin #1 which did not have bathrooms--to take a shower you had to go down to the store and there were outside johns. Also on Friday nights most everyone went over to Tin Cup to the Baptist church for a dance. I was wondering if you happened to know Sherm and his family and whether any of them still own or work at Taylor. Also I would like to know Sherm's last name and if you remember the boys (and their names if you know them) and if I remember correctly there was also one daughter (I would like her name also if you know it). Many of my fondest memories are spending vacation in the cabins and fishing on Willow Creek or the potholes. Thank you for bringing back these memories and bringing a smile to my face.

Laqueta,
It does sound like you have been around somewhat longer than me! Sherm's last name was Craner, and he and his wife Edna have both passed away and are buried on Boot Hill in the Tin Cup Cemetery. Their children and grand-children now all own and run the cabins. The business is called the Taylor Park Trading Post an can be found online at...
http://www.taylorparktradingpost.com/
A lot has changed since then. For example, most of the roads around the reservoir are now paved. It]s still a great place to go and vacation. I took my family up there last Summer (we stayed in a camper) and we had a great time!
Thanks for writing!

I sure wish Frenchy's would stay open til the first week in October. This is the weekend we always come up because its a lot less crowded and in between the Summer Season and Hunting Season. The problem is both the Cafe at Taylor and your place is always closed. I'd love to feed my family of 5 at your place. Ever consider staying open a few extra weekends?

I just completed a 6-day vacation at Holts with my two sons and two other families. Not sure what went wrong in the past but Mary & Elenor were the sweetest people you ever want to meet. The cabins (and boys trailer where we stayed)are no Ritz-Carlton by any means but were a little rough in appearance but adequate for our needs and the price was reasonable. I needed some laundry and internet access and Mary said "hey come to the office any time you need that, we'll take care of you". We took them up on the laundry part. No charge. The Trading post is no doubt nicer but the staff is much colder and the prices are much higher. I would stay at Holt's again. I like supporting honest, giving, hard-working people and that's what I saw in them. Frenchies was the coolest place I've been in a while and everyone agreed the hamburgers and shakes are to die for! Again, very friendly people at Frenchies. BTW the TP area is absolutely undescribable.

In response to the last couple of posts...
It has been stated that the people at Holt's are nice, hard-working, friendly, honest, giving, and supportive. It was my experience that they were exactly the opposite of these. They were rude, lazy, mean, dishonest, uncaring, and stole my money!
It was also stated that my experience is the one bad experience that has happened. This is obviously not true, and is evident to anyone who takes the time to read the other comments. In addition to what has been posted here, I have had several other individuals contact me privately with harrowing tales of mistreatment similar to my own.
I am glad to hear that some families have not been treated as horribly as my family was. It breaks my heart, however, to hear the other stories of mistreatment at the hands of these unscrupulous individuals.
Some people have alluded to the idea that I am somehow part of a bigger conspiracy. They have stated that I must work for the competition or that I have some other vendetta against the people at Holt's. This is simply not true. I am only trying to warn as many people as I can about what could happen to them. If they don't heed the warning, then at least I know I tried.
Again I would like to reiterate my cautionary statement to anyone thinking about staying at Holt's Cabins in Taylor Park, CO... don't do it! You may very well regret staying there, like my family and I have.
Notice that I proudly put my name to my comments, while I notice that many of the supportive comments are anonymous. I do appreciate the few individuals who actually stand up and do put their name to their words.
Keep the dialog going, everyone!
Sincerely,
Jay Haynes

Hi Jay,
We have never stayed at Holtz and have only stayed at Taylor Trading Post. Our experience with them was very nice and we have nothing but nice things to say. However, it is DUPER hard to get in with them, so unfortunately unless you camp, there isn't really too many alternatives. I have read several complaints about Holtz, but sometimes you have to take your chances if you want to go have some fun.
Thanks for the heads up and all the posts.

Jay, be advised! I have reviewed your post " My Horrible Vacation Experience!" The court declared that the First Amendment protects open and robust government debate on public issues even when such debate includes "vehement, caustic, unpleasantly sharp attacks on government and public officials." A public official or other plantiff who has voluntarily assumed a position in the public eye must prove that defamatory statements were made with knowlege that they were false or with recliss disregard of whether the were false. Where the plaintiff in a defamation action is a private citizen who is not in the public eye, the law extends a lesser degree of constitution protection to defamatory statements. Public figures voluntarily place themselves in a position that invites close scutiny, wheras private citizens who have not entered public life do not relinquish their in proteting their reputation. In additon, public figures have greater access to the means to publcounteract false statements about them. For these resons a private citizens citizens's reputation and privacy interests tend to outweigh free speech consideations and seserv greater protection from the courts. (See Gertz v. Robert Welch, Inc., 418 U.S. 323, 94 S. Ct 2997 , 41 L Ed. 2d 789 [1974]0.
JAY, READ THIS! Collins, Matthew. 2001. The law of Defamation and the internet. New York. Oxford Univ. Press of Colorado.
Jay, save yourself against furthur action, court costs, attorney fees and most certainly damages to be determined by the court. There will be no furthur action as long as your blog, "My Horrble Vacation Experience!" We will give you 14 days to remove the false accusations. We dont have a problem with the rest of the web blog. As far as the allagations go, you will need to prove them without embelishment. This will be Pro Bono.
